The future of applications from the enterprise to the desktop
Ovum would like to invite you to our forthcoming event on Tuesday July 7 in Singapore, at which David Mitchell will be discussing the future of applications from the enterprise to the desktop.
The market for business applications has changed radically in past 4 years, and enterprises need to reflect these changes in their own technology strategies. Market changes have come from a number of angles.
First, has been the evolution of software-as-a-service as a viable alternative for some categories of enterprise applications, such as Salesforce.com in the CRM market. Second, there has been consolidation among the tier 2 ERP vendors, e.g. the acquisition of SSA Global by Infor. Third, Oracle has acted as a consolidation agent in the tier 1 application space, acquiring firms like PeopleSoft, JD Edwards and Seibel. Fourth, Microsoft has been steadily building its capabilities through the products that make up its Microsoft Dynamics product line. Fifth, applications have progressively been “service enabled” as the push towards SOA becomes a reality. Sixth, a whole generation of industry specific business applications is moving towards the mainstream ERP, CRM, and SCM markets.
This combination of factors makes it very difficult for the technology and business executive in major enterprises and government departments to define their business application strategy. The session will help executives understand:
- The factors that are shaping the current market and its evolution over the next 5-10 years
- The principles that they should follow when defining a business applications strategy
- The vendor selection and management techniques that can help to minimise vendor lock-in, in both medium and long-term scenarios
- Tips for evolving their current business application strategy into a more sustainable long-term approach, reflecting the market position that will develop over time
The second session looks at Desktop Wars.Microsoft Office and Lotus Notes have historically fought a long running war for control of the office desktop for the information worker. However, the last two years have seen changes that may potentially threaten that duopoly, with OpenOffice and Google Docs entering the fight - together with alternative deployment architectures from companies like Sun Microsystems and application virtualization technologies. There are continued pressures on desktop costs that mean that upgrading to Office 2007, or to Lotus equivalents, is no longer an automatic thing. CIOs are actively looking for alternatives. This session will examine those alternatives, to look at:
- Trends in desktop productivity software that are changing the market, and their readiness for the prime time
- A comparison of the functionality of the major product offerings
- Suggestions on the factors to include in the decision making strategy about the future of the desktop in your business
