In the 1950s and early 1960s, much of political Southeast Asia was shaped by the interacting forces of the Cold War, European de-colonization and indigenous nationalisms. The emergence of new states in the wake of crumbling empires as European powers retired from Southeast Asia were framed by the political and military responses of Britain and the United States to the spread of communism in the region. In the ensuing climate of political uncertainty, Singapore was given its political independence through merger with the Federation of Malaya. A strategic naval base that was deemed critical to British (and American interests) in Southeast Asia, the political future of Singapore, and its viability as a naval base, was of great concern to British policy-makers. In this regard, the politics that led to self-government and then to political independence through merger with the Federation of Malaya was, to a large extent, influenced by the British Cold War calculations in Southeast Asia. As things turned out, the outcome of British maneuvers to prevent Singapore from being taken over by the communists were to fundamentally shape the political future of the island state.
