Introduction Most organisations practice some degree of management by objectives (MBO), some are driven by corporate vision, mission and strategy; yet other organisations adopted variations of the balance scorecard model. Regardless of which business model, management and employees must be equipped with the skills to set clear and aligned key performance indicators and individual staff goals. From the employee point of view, the connection between their goals, performance and rewards must achieve what is known as the "line of sight" principle. This workshop will give the participants a step by step guide, together with the necessary practical process and tools needed, for successful implementation. Objectives After the workshop, participants will be able to: - appreciate corporate strategic areas and KPIs - identify specific and measurable individual goals - align individual goals with departmental goals Outline Corporate KPIs - developing organizational vision and mission statements - identifying strategic areas - type of key performance indicators (KPIs) - how to establish key strategic activities Linking to Department Objectives - defining department functional objectives - relating corporate strategic areas to department strategies - defining departmental key activities - establishing department performance indicators and targets - resolving inter-department co-ordination Getting Staff Members to Write Their Own Goals - type of goal - level of outcome - how to write good goal statements using SMART goals criteria - how to set goals with subordinates with the line of sight principle Tackling Practical Problems - lack of connectivity - routine tasks as goal statements - areas difficult to quantify - vague goal statement - no targets to set - "why rock the boat?" by setting high targets - other challenges Work Tools (Worksheet Format) Included - drafting corporate mission, vision, strategic areas and key performance indicators - identifying department strategies - identifying cascading goals - identifying line of sight performance indicators - identifying organisational vision-individual task connectivity - planning goals for self and subordinates - individual goal setting - developing the level of performance outcome - identifying individual performance goals (non-cascading) - developing individual performance goals (non-cascading) - performance self evaluation For Whom Managers, executives, officers, engineers, project team leaders and supervisors who need to set goals for their team, themselves as well as guide their subordinates to set relevant goals.
