The late 19th to early 20th century was a time when China’s political and intellectual landscapes went through tremendous change. The abolishment of the civil service examination and the replacement of the monarchy by a government were preludes to this change. A core feature underlying the change was the removal of many Confucian texts previously regarded as sacred among Chinese society. Such a process not only unwittingly marginalized the “shi” or the traditional elites in modern China, but also caused much intellectual disorientation. The talk by Dr Luo Zhitian will look at the challenges faced by the educated class in modern China in reassessing their intellectual identity and re-defining their social responsibilities after this transitional period of Chinese history.
