Reflections on the Writing of “A Boon Returned - the History of Mun San Fook Tuck Chee”

Saturday, 5 July 2008
2 pm – 4 pm
Possibility Room, Level 5, National Library Building

The two most important rivers in Singapore's history are the Singapore and Kallang Rivers. Once a busy waterway, the history of the latter can be traced to the 16th century. Migration of Chinese settlers to the Kallang Basin began with the founding of the settlement, and by the mid-19th century many industries such as sawmills, ship building, brick making etc. were concentrated there. The early Chinese emigrants brought along their own customs and traditional beliefs, and old temples built by them often tell the story of the coming and settling of our forefathers. The Mun San Fook Tuck Chee situated in the Kallang Basin is one such temple, with a history of over 140 years. Originally with strong occupational affinities to the brick making industry, its functions have continuously evolved with the passage of time.

The book “A Boon Returned - the History of Mun San Fook Tuck Chee” is an attempt to record this almost forgotten chapter in the development of the Kallang Basin. To mark the launch of this new book, the Selat Society will be organising a talk in Mandarin and English by its authors Loo Say Chong and Ang Yik Han. Join us if you want to have a glimpse into a part of early Chinese society in Singapore, and find out more about what is so special about this temple.
