Pop Goes the Technosphere at RIBA North

This open discussion will explore the emerging technologies that are driving new biological narratives, edging towards a new urban paradigm. The conversation will be supported by slides of Biopolus's global projects, and István Kenyeres' reaction to being invited to be a member of the Circular Economy 100 Directory by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.

----

Istvan Kenyeres

Istvan Kenyeres is a chemical engineer and self-described biotechnologist. That means that his interests in public space, resource distribution, and urban living are almost always filtered through the lens of micro-organisms, animals and biological ecosystems. His invention - the Biopolus concept - uses the richness of microbial communities and

higher-level organisms that naturally live in the root zones of plants. The MNR bioreactor is a type of water recycling technology that incorporates plants and (patented) synthetic roots to create a unique habitat, one which keeps these organisms thriving and actively cleaning water that passes through.

Vincent Walsh

Vincent Walsh is director of City Lab, part of Art Labs at LJMU. Vincent is a multidisciplinary researcher, specialising in emerging technologies and urban agricultural systems. He was awarded the Chartered Institution for Water and Environmental Management, Nick Reeves Award for Arts and the Green Apple Award for the best sustainable food project in the UK. His research was chosen as one of the 100 Big Ideas that will change the future by the Research Council UK. As a transdisciplinary theorist, with an interest in biological and technological infrastructures, he focuses on the emergence of urban cultures, capable of becoming resilient beyond climatic and economic disturbance. With ten years' experience of developing innovative commercial and community food projects across temperate and tropical climates, his projects incorporate arts and sciences. Forming novel techniques with interconnectivity for decentralised urbanism.
