Mad About Singlish
Saturday, 30 January 2010
10.00 am – 12.00 pm
Possibility Room, Level 5
National Library Building
100 Victoria Street
Uniquely Singaporean, Singlish is the product of English mixed with a variety of multicultural languages. The topic of Singlish has never been far from kopitiam discussions and forums online. In this programme, we aim to uncover the origins of Singlish and trace the development of English in Singapore. We will also provide local insights into the pros and cons of whether Singlish should be left to flourish or flounder - in Singapore.
Speakers:
Kirpal Singh is an Associate Professor of English Literature and Creative Thinking at the Singapore Management University and has authored and edited over 16 books. He is also a poet, literary, cultural critic and has profound knowledge of the English language development and usage in Singapore.
Jack Tsen-Ta Lee is an Assistant Professor of Law at the Singapore Management University and has been intrigued by the uniqueness of this Singaporean culture and compiles an online Singlish dictionary at the expense of his own free time and will. Jack is for the preservation of Singlish even though he does not speak Singlish.
Due to limited seats, registration is required and can be made via http://golibrary.nlb.gov.sg and surf on to MAS'.
