LEE KONG CHIAN RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP SERIES: Women And Warfare In Malaysia And Singapore, 1941–1

3.00 pm – 5.30 pm
Imagination Room, Level 5
National Library Building
100 Victoria Street
War history has depicted women as warriors, fighters and spies to wives, daughters, lovers and war-victims. For instance, some were indirectly involved in the Japanese Occupation by providing various assistance to the anti-Japanese guerillas while others were involved directly with the resistance movement. In Malaya and Singapore, the 1989 signing of the Hat Yai Peace Accord which ended the 40-year guerilla war between the Malaysian government and the Malayan Communist Party brought to the forefront the story of women involvement in underground and guerilla activities since the 1930s. Subsequently, most of these former guerillas had settled in Southern Thailand. While some women saw their fight as a “form of rebellion against feudalistic, patriarchal oppression” others joined because of poverty, some followed their husbands, lovers or relatives without understanding the communist ideology and struggles. Some were even coerced to live with the guerillas in the jungle. Under this stressful and uncertain conditions, these female guerillas lived their everyday life together with male comrades. They went through similar hardships. While war have forced men and women to live and fight together, in reality, womanhood was never totally separated from female guerillas. Many had the additional burdens like illicit love affairs and unwanted pregnancies.
Join Ms Mahani Musa (Lee Kong Chian Research Fellow, National Library Singapore) as she explores the space women had carved out for themselves in war history.
